In 1953, Howard Thurman’s work, Meditations of the Heart, a collection of prayers, poems, and meditations, was published. In one of the theologian and civil rights leader’s offerings, he writes that during turbulent times, “Let us not be deceived. It is just as important as ever to attend to the little graces by which the dignity of our lives is maintained and sustained…to drink in the beauty that is within reach, to clothe one’s life with simple deeds of kindness…” How might the words from this meditation, “Life Goes On,” in concert with contemporary reflections, guide us as we live in and move through these turbulent times. Let’s explore how we may honor where we are, while nourishing our resistance, spirit, and hope.
