As we move into late fall and the chilly nights of November, we’ll begin exploring our next theme: covenant. The online version of the Merriam-Webster dictionary provides several definitions of this word, including: 1) “a usually formal, solemn, and binding agreement;” 2) “a written agreement or promise usually under seal between two or more parties especially for the performance of some action;” and “to promise by a covenant” and “to enter into a covenant.
These definitions remind us that the word “covenant” is both a noun and a verb, both a thing and an action. As Unitarian Universalists, we understand covenants to be a living, breathing agreement. They describe a way of being with one another, of being in community, and of engaging with the wider world – they are a religious and spiritual practice centered in commitment, justice-making, and love.
Join us this Sunday as we explore the theme of covenant and embody how our covenanted community can offer comfort, support, and love in these times.
