“We are nature. The air in our lungs, the water we drink, the soil, the sunshine that nourishes the life forms that comprise the food we eat. We all depend on the health of the biosphere.” Karenna Gore, director of Center for Earth Ethics. It is proposed that the UUA’s 7th principal i.e., “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part”, be expanded to define our role as part of nature by adding “With humility and reverence, we covenant to protect Earth and all beings from exploitation, creating and nurturing sustainable relationships of repair, mutuality, and justice.” Using indigenous wisdom reflected in the book Braiding Sweetgrass, we will discuss ways to deepen our understanding of this proposed UU covenant with nature. Let’s consider how to apply this covenant with nature in our daily lives. And how can our UU faith amplify the message that “We ARE nature”?
