In the foreword of the third edition of her work “Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities” (2015), historian, activist, and author Rebecca Solnit writes that “your opponents would love you to believe that it’s hopeless, that you have no power, that there’s no reason to act, that you can’t win.” But Solnit reminds us that “hope is a gift that you don’t have to surrender, a power you don’t have to throw away.” The hope that Solnit speaks of is not a whimsical one or a merely defiant one, but rather “is about broad perspectives with specific possibilities, ones that invite or demand that we act.” She reminds us that while holding the gamut of the complexities and realities of our time, reaching back to movements and moments that sparked or illuminated transformations, whatever the size of its grandeur, can show “a victory is a milestone on the road, evidence that sometimes we win, and encouragement to keep going, not to stop.” Such explorations also highlight and affirm our interconnectedness, and the intersectionality of liberations.
Join us this Sunday as we hear about the lives of Dolores Huerta, Gloria Steinem, and Angela Davis; the movements and moments they’ve led; their enduring activism; and the ways they have inspired and supported one another as they take action for a more just and equitable world. May their holy work alight our hope and remind us how powerful we are.
Rev. Shaie has been blessed with a life that’s provided her with opportunities to meet folx from diverse backgrounds, communities, and cultures. Her work experiences include theatre and television, photo researching, being a chaplain at a children’s hospital, and accounting. She earned her Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School in 2018, and on the night of the Autumn Equinox in 2025, she was co-ordained by BuxMontUU and UUs of Mt. Airy, the congregation where she completed her ministerial internship. Most recently, she joined BuxMont UU Fellowship as their Affiliated Community Minister.
