February 1 marks the Irish Celtic holiday of Imbolc, a time when we are still deep in the throes of the darkness and cold of Winter. Even though we may not be able to see it yet with our physical eyes, signs of light and warmth are beginning to emerge. Deep within the earth, seeds are beginning to send out tentative tendrils that will make their way through the soil and turn up as sprouts. Animals are getting pregnant with babies who will be born in the Spring. As the days slowly grow longer, we can feel light and warmth beginning to return. The Goddess Brighid is said to oversee this time and this is her holiday. She is the Goddess of wisdom, poetry, healing, protection, smithing and domesticated animals. A perpetual sacred flame and holy wells are her symbols. The imagery and mythology of this sacred holiday help us through the darkest part of Winter so that we can be ready to receive the light of the Spring.
