Democracy & Our UU Values

As Unitarian Universalists, we covenant to “support the use of inclusive democratic processes to make decisions within our congregations, our Association, and society at large.” This morning we will reflect on our own faith in democracy, and also acknowledge the difficulties and challenges of holding to this faith.  What does it mean to support democracy as part of our spiritual values? What does it mean to support democracy in our “society at large” in America as it is today? In this talk, I will share some of the wisdom I have gathered from American thinkers, from UU spiritual leaders, and from the people and practices of this community as I have grappled with these questions.

Julie Kimmel has been a member of BuxMont for fifteen years, and she has enjoyed connecting with others through small group ministry, volunteering with various committees, and teaching RE. As a kid, she enjoyed reading both fantasy and history, and her curiosity about the past eventually led her to complete a PH.D. in American History and onto a career teaching history to high school students. She is active in her community, and works to “get out the vote” every election. She also loves being outdoors, hiking, swimming, reading, and watching movies.
